Tiny Treasures 

Commonly considered ‘pouched mammals’, marsupials are defined by their unique reproductive features. Marsupials give birth to undeveloped young which generally grow and mature inside the mother’s pouch.

 

Originating in the Americas 125 million years ago, marsupials migrated to Australia through the Gondwana super-continent. Marsupials flourished here, adapting to our island’s diverse climate and rich habitats. Today, over two thirds of the world’s marsupials call our nation home. From the iconic kangaroo to the elusive numbat, marsupials hold a critical role in our ecosystems and in our culture. Devastatingly, feral species and habitat loss are pushing our miraculous marsupials to their limits, shamefully placing Australia as the world’s record holder for mammal extinction.

 

Whether it’s the thrill of spotting a koala, or the joy of witnessing a joey emerging from its pouch, all Australians are captivated by the magic of marsupials. While we recognise our iconic species, many Australians are unaware of our most vulnerable marsupials.

 

Experience a year of Australia’s tiniest unsung treasures through reproduction of my original watercolour artworks. Each page celebrates a unique marsupial, all in need of our help. I hope this calendar brings joy and inspires the conservation of our tiny treasures and the ecosystems they call home.
